Echoes of Our Ancestors

featuring work by Spencer Evans, Sandra Scott-Revelle, & Felicia Jordan

June 10 thru August 5, 2023

This year, Kinfolk House is exploring themes of self and community care. Continuing this narrative, our summer project brings together Spencer Evans, Sandra Scott-Revelle, and Felicia Jordan, whose works explore generational harm and healing.

Echoes of Our Ancestors connects historical narratives with present-day stories of internal conflict, trauma, loss, and resilience. Dallas-based artist Felicia Jordan presents interactive pieces conceived through her research about her father and his battle with dementia and new works that pair traditional quilting techniques with 3D printing and visualize trauma experienced by Black people and other people of color in the medical system.

Following the theme of building bridges between the past and present, Spencer Evan’s work features dramatic poses and facial expressions to relay internal conflict brought on by external circumstances. His work highlights identity and culture within Black communities, and the unique skills that Black people have acquired as they navigate survival-based assimilation across generations. Sandra Scott-Revelle’s applique creations tell the emotional stories of people who were enslaved in the U.S. and seeking freedom. Through a textile practice reminiscent of quilting, Scott-Revelle reveals narratives of strength, sorrow, and sacrifice.
