Community Voices is an open mic gathering featuring poetry, storytelling, acoustic music, and spoken word from emerging and established voices in the community. Artists, musicians, poets, storytellers, and community members of all ages are invited to sign up and share.

Celebrate Juneteenth at Kinfolk House with an intergenerational family gathering featuring hands-on art-making stations, storytelling activities, music, BBQ, and community fellowship. This program is designed to welcome families early in the exhibition and create space for reflection, creativity, and celebration.

Kinfolk House is also inviting artists, storytellers, and art educators interested in facilitating an art activity or activation station during the Juneteenth Celebration to complete the Artist Interest Form. Selected artists will receive a stipend. Up to four artists will be selected.

Join us for an informal Community Welcome at Kinfolk House. Throughout the day, visitors are invited to experience the house as a lived creative environment through music, writing prompts, reflection spaces, and opportunities for connection.

 A come-and-go, all-ages experience activating the exhibition through hands-on making and guided exploration.

Participants will rotate through artist-led stations:

• Bernardo Vallarino: Interactive Gallery Exploration
  A participatory experience encouraging close looking and reflection through guided prompts and observation.

• Cecilia Sierra: Block Printing Workshop
  Create your own prints using artist-designed imagery. Participants may print on paper or fabric and contribute to a collaborative piece.

• Ruth Leonella Buentello: Photo Transfer & Textile Workshop
  Learn how to transfer photographs onto paper and incorporate stitching techniques inspired by the artist’s practice.
  Participants are encouraged to bring a personal or family photo.

This program balances reflection and creativity, offering space to engage deeply with the work while creating something of your own.

Spend the evening in conversation with the artists as they reflect on their work, creative process, and the themes explored throughout the exhibition. This talk offers deeper insight into the personal and cultural narratives that shape Southern Soliloquies.

Southern Soliloquies is a collaborative exhibition featuring Bernardo Vallarino, Cecilia Sierra, and Ruth Leonela Buentello.

Through memory, material, and intimate acts of making, Southern Soliloquies reflects on identity, inheritance, and the quiet truths we carry with us. The artists draw from personal and collective histories to explore how land, labor, faith, and family shape lived experience across the U.S. South and borderlands.

Each work offers a moment of pause—inviting viewers to listen closely to stories that are often held privately, spoken softly, or passed down through generations. Together, the exhibition creates a space for reflection, connection, and shared witnessing.

Join us Saturday, November 15 from 6:30–9:00 PM for an evening of sky-watching, storytelling, and connection. At 7:00 PM, we’ll begin with a short introduction connecting the night’s activities to Inner Space. Together, we’ll view a brief film on ways to see the night sky and then use star maps and our hands to navigate the constellations above us. 

At 8:30 PM, Iv Amenti will perform The Pharaoh’s Soul—a powerful story about the constellation Orion (Greece) / Osiris (Egypt). Orion will be visible in the eastern sky that evening, offering us a chance to connect the story to the stars themselves. Don’t miss this special night with Andrea Tosten and community.

Acclaimed performance poet Tammy Gomez takes us into the light as she battles the darkness and isolation of solitary confinement. Her one-woman performance work “Saliendo Abierta” (Emerging Open) explores the internal crisis that ensued when she became trapped in her bedroom closet, and the stories, memories, and zen-like focus that helped her open the door two and a half days later.  (Premiered at the Sor Juana Festival of Performance in April 2009,at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center in Austin.)

For this presentation of "Saliendo Abierta", Tammy would like to encourage questions and conversation that circle around ideas of self-preservation and resilience; coping strategies in times of strife; and the ways we use creativity to keep our inner spaces bright as we face darkness and destruction.

Inspired by the scholarship of Saidiya Hartman, this hands-on workshop invites participants to explore the method of Critical Fabulation—storytelling that fills the silences of the historical archive. Using found photographs, documents, and letters, guests will create their own imaginative responses rooted in history, memory, and possibility.

Join us for an afternoon conversation with Granbury-based artist and builder Alan Siggers, whose work is featured in our current exhibition Home Made. Alan will reflect on his creative process, influences, and the deep relationship between labor, memory, and the meaning of home in his work.

Long before Kinfolk House opened its doors to the public, Alan played a key role in its physical restoration. In this artist talk, he’ll share how that experience—and his background in construction—shapes his art practice across painting, sculpture, and installation.

Expect a 30–40 minute talk followed by a brief audience Q&A.

Join us for an immersive afternoon of poetry, dialogue, and creative exploration with multidisciplinary artist & poet Xxavier Carter at Kinfolk House. This event will feature a dynamic poetry reading, followed by a conversation on the intersections of poetry, performance, and social commentary in his work.

Join us at Kinfolk House for Hanji & Tea: A Slow Art Practice, a hands-on workshop led by Minji Kang-Watrous, where tradition and mindfulness come together through art.

Rooted in Korean heritage, Hanji is a durable yet delicate handmade paper that carries centuries of craftsmanship. In this workshop, attendees will explore Hanji collage by creating a sunset-inspired composition on a wooden postcard panel—learning how to cut, tear, and layer with intention.

This process requires patience, inviting us to slow down and fully engage with each step. As each layer dries, we’ll pause for an unconventional Korean tea ceremony, creating space for reflection, connection, and stillness. Through this guided experience, we honor tradition while embracing modernity—finding beauty in slowness and meaning in process.
